Ways to Give

Your benevolent gifts go where you want them to go. An undesignated gift to the VBH Foundation will benefit benevolence where the need is greatest. You can also designate your gift to a specific LifeSpire community.

Ways to Contribute

No matter how you choose to give, your support makes a meaningful impact. Each contribution helps us serve LifeSpire residents with dignity and compassion.

Each community has a Benevolent Fund.  100% of your gifts to these funds can be used for residents living in the communities today.

Each community also has an Endowed Fund for Benevolence.  100% of your gifts to these funds are permanently restricted and invested for the future.  The annual earnings on the fund’s corpus can be used for residents living in the communities today or in the future.

Many people choose to honor the passing of a loved one with a gift.  Friends often make gifts in their memory.  Families often include this language in the obituary:  “in lieu of flowers, please make a gift the VBH Foundation [or the Community’s] Benevolent Fund.”

Family members often celebrate the birthday or special occasion of their loved ones with a gift in their honor. A tribute gift to the VBH Foundation or the Community’s Benevolent Fund is a great way to share their love for you.

You can support our community team members by contributing to the Employee Crisis Fund, which is available to staff should they experience financial hardships.

Our team members go above and beyond to provide the best care possible to residents. You can honor their work and dedication by contributing to your community’s Crisis Fund, to help a team member in need.

As a faith-based organization birthed in Christian values and Virginia Baptist traditions, LifeSpire of Virginia’s communities seek to provide spiritual refreshment and encouragement to residents and staff alike. Each community provides chaplaincy services and offers a variety of spiritual life programs. You can be a part of promoting spiritual wellness by giving to support spiritual life programs and pastoral care.

The Virginia Baptist Homes Foundation Influencer Award honors a champion at each of our communities who causes a positive effect on our mission to enhance the lives of their friends and neighbors. Influencers embody the core values of our communities through their spirit, their engagement, and their generosity.

Like a tree cannot grow without the influence of the sun, the Virginia Baptist Homes Foundation cannot grow without the support and generosity of our influencers and supporters.

You can sponsor a tribute ad for our website, promoting your support of this year’s Influencers and of the VBH Foundation/LifeSpire of Virginia communities.

Many people 70 1/2 years or older choose to use their required minimum distribution to give up to $100,000 from their IRA directly to a qualified charity such as ours without having to pay income taxes on the money.

The transfer generates neither taxable income nor a tax deduction, so you benefit even if you do not itemize your deductions.  Your IRA charitable rollover gift can satisfy all or part of that requirement. Contact your IRA manager and instruct them to send a gift directly to the VBH Foundation.  For additional assistance, contact the Foundation at 804-521-9213.

Some donors choose to make an even bigger impact with their gift by joining the Monthly Giving Circle! A commitment to giving every month helps sustain available funding for seniors in need. By giving monthly, you’ll also be helping lower our costs, as you will not receive future solicitations.

Many companies offer to match gifts made by their employees and retirees, doubling the impact of your contribution.  If your company participates, complete your company’s matching gift form and return it to us with your gift. CLICK HERE  to see if your employer matches gifts.

Stocks and publicly traded securities are easy to give and offer tax benefits even if you don’t itemize your tax returns.  Instead of giving cash, some donors give shares of appreciated stocks.  Some even then use the cash to purchase identical replacement shares, leaving their portfolio intact but eliminating capital gains.

The best stocks to use for charitable giving are those that you have owned longer than one year and that have increased greatly in value. The proceeds from the sale of the stocks will benefit the Foundation’s support of the LifeSpire of Virginia ministry.

Permanent residents of LifeSpire of Virginia pay an entry fee for the lifetime right to live in one of our communities. Contract options were offered to them that include 90%, 50%, or 0% refund at the end of the contract.

Some residents have designated all or part of their entry fee refund to help others through the work of the VBH Foundation. Of course, if you select the 0% option, there would be no refund and consequently no money to fund a gift, unless one lived in the community 50 months or less. This kind of gift is easy to make, does not require revising a will, and isn’t paid until the contract ends.

FAQs

Residents who have paid an entry fee and qualified for residency in a LifeSpire of Virginia community are eligible for benevolence. All residents requesting benevolent assistance go through an application process that includes a financial review of current and recent years. All awards are made by the LifeSpire of Virginia Benevolence Committee.
A gift to support benevolence helps a resident who outlives their assets through no fault of their own and needs financial assistance to pay for their care at a LifeSpire of Virginia community.
During 2024, we provided over $1.1 million dollars of benevolent support to 52 residents across all LifeSpire of Virginia communities:

  • 86% are women; 74% are widows
  • 57% are Baptist
  • 69% are over the age of 90
  • 64% are cared for in assisted living, memory support or skilled nursing

A gift to the Employee Education Fund supports higher education scholarships for eligible team members, their children or grandchildren. A gift to the Spiritual Life fund supports our chaplains and the faith-based programs and services available to all residents, team members, and families. The Employee Crisis Fund supports members in time of need, providing resources if they do experience a crisis and need a helping hand.

Your cash gifts help our current residents through the available Benevolence Fund donation options.
Your contribution to an Endowed Fund for Benevolence will continue to help residents in the future through earnings from maturation.

Most gifts are fully tax deductible. If you receive any goods or services in return for your gift, such as an event sponsorship, the fair market value of those items may not be tax deductible.
Contributions to the VBH Foundation are subject to IRS Code sections 501(c)(3) and 501(a)(1). All donors receive annual gift statements for their contributions.

All gifts are used as specified by the donor. That is, all gifts designated to a certain community benefit only that community. All gifts restricted to endowment or capital projects are tracked separately and used as the donor intends. Gifts undesignated will be used where the need is greatest.

Yes, donors often pledge gifts to be paid over time. For example, a donor who pledges $25,000 might complete the commitment over three to five years. Contact the Foundation to inquire about making a pledge commitment.

The Foundation’s endowment funds are invested by a professional management firm in a diverse portfolio of investments including equity, fixed income, and defensive investments.
Our investment mix is governed by our official investment policy, which is administered by the Investment Committee of the LifeSpire of Virginia Board of Trustees.

The VBH Foundation adheres to the Code of Ethical Conduct published by the Association of Fundraising Professionals. Included with that code is a Donor Bill of Rights.
The Donor Bill of Rights was created by the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP), the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy (AHP), the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), and the Giving Institute: Leading Consultants to Non-Profits. It has been endorsed by numerous organizations.
