John Bates embodies a lifetime of curiosity, service, and quiet leadership. Born and raised in Bainbridge, Georgia, John’s journey has taken him from civil engineering at Georgia Tech to influential roles in transportation planning, higher education, faith communities, and civic life. After earning his degree in civil engineering, John spent more than 20 years in Atlanta working with the Georgia Department of Transportation and the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority, where he played a role in shaping major regional transportation initiatives. Along the way, he completed both a Masters and Ph.D. in Business Administration, [JL1] reflecting his lifelong love of learning and thoughtful inquiry.

Following his professional career in planning, John transitioned into higher education, joining the faculty of what is now Georgia Southwestern State University. There, he taught for nearly two decades, served as Dean of the School of Business Administration, and was ultimately named Professor Emeritus. Even in retirement, John has remained deeply engaged—writing and self‑publishing books on family history, theology, and social commentary, and continuing his personal journey as a scholar and teacher.

Community service has always been central to John’s life. A Rotarian since 1982, he has led clubs, served at the district level, and most recently helped establish a Rotary satellite club at The Summit, creating new opportunities for residents to stay engaged in service despite mobility or scheduling challenges. His commitment to Rotary’s mission—particularly its global efforts to eradicate polio—reflects his belief in service that truly “does good in the world.”

Equally meaningful is John’s lifelong involvement in the church. After being raised Baptist, he and his late wife, Harriet, found a spiritual home in the Presbyterian Church, where John served as a teacher, elder, lay pastor, and mentor across multiple communities. His faith is grounded in patience, humility, and a belief that the journey of learning and service is never complete.

Since moving to The Summit in October 2023, John has continued to be a catalyst for thoughtful engagement—helping launch the Great Decisions Current Issues discussion group, fostering respectful dialogue across differing viewpoints, and modeling what it means to remain intellectually curious, civically engaged, and generously present. When asked what he is most proud of, John speaks first of his children, and then of something larger: leaving a legacy of having made a difference.

That legacy of influence—grounded in learning, service, faith, and community—is exactly what we honor today.
