Gary Shanks knows what it’s like to wake up sick and needs a neighbor to pickup a prescription. “I’ve been there and I’m sure most people have too,” Shanks said.
He suggested “ReFRES,” a resident run-errand service, to Carolyn Eubank, president of the Resident Council. She loved the idea.“I think all of us have had times when unexpected circumstances prevented us from getting out to pick up a prescription or groceries,” Carolyn said. “This is a very small thing for us as volunteers because it is something we can do as part of our normal shopping routine, but it will mean a lot to the residents in need.”
Seven volunteers already agreed to help with the program. “If you were in your house, you’d probably call your neighbor next door,” Gary said. “It’s just a service that we can offer each other.”
The resident-run errand service is available to any resident unable—due to illness or physical limitations—to go to the pharmacy or grocery store and pick up five or fewer items.
Residents simply contact a volunteer directly and if available, the volunteer will run the errand.
Carolyn said ReFRES is another way for residents to care for each other. “In many ways, we are a family and this is what families do and we help each other in times of need,” she said. “I tell everyone that we are a warm, welcoming community and this is just another demonstration of how that is true.”
