Al and Jean’s story began long before they ever realized it was one story. Born less than a mile apart in rural Angola, Indiana, their paths eventually crossed for good when Jean transferred to Al’s high school during her sophomore year. What began as a kind gesture—Al not wanting Jean to feel lonely after a mutual friend moved away—grew into a lifelong partnership. After six years of dating, they were married the night before Jean graduated from college, beginning a journey that has now spanned more than 65 years of marriage.
Al served his country proudly in the United States Air Force, a career that took the family across the country and around the world, including assignments in South Carolina, Florida, Hawaii, Japan, and frequent travel throughout Asia. Jean balanced frequent deployments and moves with raising their three children, teaching school, and later earning a master’s degree in guidance and counseling from the University of South Carolina. Though she initially believed her calling might be in traditional classroom education, Jean discovered her true passion in music, especially piano. She went on to build a deeply rewarding career as a piano teacher for nearly 30 years, serving as president of the Peninsula Music Teachers Association and mentoring students from early childhood through high school. Music, faith, and service became lifelong throughlines for both of them.
After Al’s Air Force retirement in 1984—and later 18 years as a training officer at Langley Credit Union—the couple eventually turned their thoughts toward downsizing. While Jean was hesitant at first, a visit to The Chesapeake changed everything. The warmth of the community, welcoming residents, and spirit of fellowship made the decision clear, and they have now called The Chesapeake home for nearly eight years. What once felt like simply a move gradually became “home” in the deepest sense.
Today, Al and Jean are deeply woven into the life of the community. Jean plays piano for Sunday services, funerals, hymn sings, and leads the choir—offering her gifts as an act of faith rather than recognition. Jean’s daily piano practices in her apartment have become a favorite of residents and team members, listening to the unofficial concert on the other side of the door. Al supports these efforts through technology, creating presentations and slideshows, and also shares his love of history and travel through monthly educational programs, having presented dozens over the years. He serves on the Activities Committee and remains happily busy—though he admits his favorite chair is still a recliner.
Together, Al and Jean value friendship, service, and staying active—physically, mentally, and spiritually. Jean credits her parents for instilling in her a love for people and a commitment to serving the Lord, while Al points to the steady influence of his uncle after losing his father at a young age. Their shared faith continues to guide how they show up for others, whether through music, teaching, hospitality, or simple conversation in the hallway.
When asked about mottos, Al jokes, “Don’t get caught,” while Jean offers the words that truly anchor their life together: “The Lord is my light and my redeemer.” It’s a faith that has carried them around the world, through decades of service, and into a community they now proudly call home.
