Linda Fleshman, The Glebe
Influencer Award Honorees
April 16, 2026
For more than 20 years, Linda Fleshman has been a pillar of warmth, service, and quiet leadership at The Glebe. A native of Campbell County, Virginia, Linda grew up on her family’s tobacco farm, where she learned the values that would shape her life: hard work, generosity, curiosity, and a deep commitment to helping others. Influenced by her parents, her close-knit church community, and the stories shared by her grandmother on their front porch, Linda developed a servant’s heart early on — one she has carried into every chapter of her life.
Linda graduated from Longwood University and began a remarkable 42 year career in education all at Preston Park Elementary School in Roanoke. A dedicated early childhood educator, she taught first, second, and third grade before finding her greatest joy in kindergarten. She loved watching children learn to read, and she often witnessed small miracles — like the student who arrived one morning suddenly reading after months of struggle. Linda was so deeply valued that when she was once set to be transferred, her principal intervened: “We need you here.”
After retiring, Linda continued nurturing young minds by volunteering at the public library and reading to children at local daycare centers. Her monthly visits earned her the affectionate nickname “the story lady,” thanks to a two-year-old who recognized her instantly as she walked in the door.
Linda moved to The Glebe in August 2005, just as the community was opening. She and her friend Diane were among the early “reservation holders,” active even before the building was complete. Shortly after moving in, they were tasked with organizing the brand-new library — a responsibility that blossomed into a decade’s long commitment. Under Linda’s care, the library has grown into a beloved community treasure, supported by donated books and a dedicated committee she helped build.
Beyond the library, Linda’s influence touches nearly every corner of The Glebe. She has served on the Dining Committee for many years; contributes to the Spiritual Life Committee; and leads the community prayer chain — a role that reflects her compassion and dedication to others. Residents describe her as steady, thoughtful, humble, and always willing to help.
During this year’s nomination process, multiple residents called and emailed to share stories of Linda’s kindness, leadership, and unwavering service. The number of nominations she received stands as a powerful testament to the profound impact she has on this community.
When asked what motivates her, Linda simply says: “I just like to help.” She credits this spirit to her parents, who modeled everyday generosity — her father quietly supporting neighbors in need, and her mother sewing clothing for anyone who asked.
Today, Linda continues to embody those values through every committee she serves on, every book she shelves, and every prayer request she handles with care. Her influence is felt not in grand gestures, but in the constancy of her service, the depth of her friendships, and the love she pours into her community. It is for these reasons, and so many more, that we honor Linda Fleshman as this year’s Glebe Influencer.
