Expansion Updates

Not far from The Glebe’s grounds, state and national officials are partnering to protect and conserve the natural beauty of the area. The U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service, the Open Space Institute and the Chesapeake Conservancy recently announced the acquisition of 4,664 acres in Botetourt County. The property, which is now part of the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests, is one of the largest tracts to be acquired for conservation purposes in Virginia in decades.
The addition of the land to the national forests protects the historic Grace Furnace, an iron-ore furnace located on the property that dates back to the early 19th century. The property is located adjacent to recreational trails and provides access to Craig Creek, a recreational waterway for boating and fishing. Efforts to conserve this land will support 14 freshwater springs and 10 miles of trout streams.
“This important acquisition continues the legacy of the Jefferson National Forest in protecting water resources, conserving wildlife, and providing recreational access to public lands,” said District Ranger Dan McKeague.
“With its beautiful trees and wild trout streams at the headwaters of the Chesapeake Bay, the Grace Furnace property is big, special and inspiring,” said Joel Dunn, president and CEO of Chesapeake Conservancy. “This successful project highlights the importance and power of combining philanthropic and public investments in protecting our planet.”
Conservation of this land is sure to benefit the residents of The Glebe who enjoy easy access to hiking, biking, paddling, horseback riding and fishing in the Roanoke Valley.
“The natural beauty of the area is one of the many reasons our residents choose to call The Glebe home. We are thrilled to see that measures are being taken to protect and preserve the history that is right in our backyard,” said The Glebe’s Executive Director Ellen D’Ardenne.
A celebration event is on the schedule for Spring 2020.
