Benevolence

Give Now Honor Tree - Honor someone with a gift to the VBH Foundation.

You Can SUPPORT SENIORS

Throughout LifeSpire of Virginia’s nearly 70-year history, generous donors have supported many residents who, through no fault of their own, outlived their financial resources. On average, there are 50 to 60 of our 1,200 residents annually who need financial assistance to help cover the cost of their care.

Your support provides peace of mind, security, and dignity to residents in need.

You Can CHOOSE WHERE TO GIVE

Make a gift to the VBH Foundation and choose where your funds will be applied. An undesignated gift will benefit benevolence where the need is greatest.

You Can Choose When Your Gift Will Benefit a Resident

You Can Honor a Loved One

Many people choose to honor the passing of a loved one with a gift in their memory. Ask your family to put “in lieu of flowers, please make a gift the VBH Foundation [or the Community’s] Benevolent Fund” in the obituary.
Family members often honor the birthday or special occasion of their loved ones with a gift in their honor. Let your family know that in lieu of gifts, a tribute gift to the VBH Foundation or the Community’s Benevolent Fund is a great way to share their love for you.

A Tax-Saving Way to Give

If you are 70 1/2 years or older, you can give up to $100,000 from your IRA directly to a qualified charity such as ours without having to pay income taxes on the money. This law no longer has an expiration date so you are free to make annual gifts to our organization this year and well into the future.

Why Consider This Gift?
You pay no income taxes on the gift. The transfer generates neither taxable income nor a tax deduction, so you benefit even if you do not itemize your deductions.

If you have not yet taken your required minimum distribution for the year, your IRA charitable rollover gift can satisfy all or part of that requirement.

Contact your IRA manager and instruct them to send a gift directly to the VBH Foundation.

You Can Join the Monthly Giving Circle

You can make an even bigger impact with your gift by joining the Monthly Giving Circle! A commitment to giving every month helps to sustain available funding for seniors in need. By giving a monthly, tax-deductible donation, you’ll be joining a special community of other dedicated supporters. Members of the Monthly Giving Circle will be invited to our annual Donor Dinner, receive a Foundation Donor Pin, and receive Circle updates throughout the year. You’ll also be helping to lower our costs, as you will not receive future solicitations.

Matching Gifts

Many companies offer to match gifts made by their employees and retirees, making an even bigger impact with your donation.  If your company participates, complete the necessary matching gift form provided by your company, and return it to us with your donation. CLICK HERE to see if your employer matches gifts.

Gifts of Appreciated Securities

Stocks and publicly traded securities are easy to give and offer tax benefits even if you don’t itemize your tax returns.  Instead of giving cash, you can give shares of appreciated stocks, then use your cash to purchase identical replacement shares, leaving your portfolio intact but eliminating capital gains.

The best stocks to use for charitable giving are those that you have owned longer than one year and have increased greatly in value. The proceeds from the sale of the stocks will benefit the Foundation’s support of the LifeSpire of Virginia ministry.

Gifts of Refundable Portion of Resident Entry Fees

Permanent residents of LifeSpire of Virginia pay an entry fee for the lifetime right to live in one of our four communities. Contract options were offered to them that include 90%, 50%, or 0% refund at the end of the contract.

Some residents may want to designate all or part of their entry fee refund to help others through the work of the VBH Foundation. Of course, if you select the 0% option, there would be no refund and consequently no money to fund a gift, unless one lived in the community 50 months or less. This kind of gift is easy to make, does not require revising a will, and isn’t paid until the contract ends.

Estate Planning and Legacy Gifts

By including LifeSpire of Virginia in your will or estate plans, or by choosing a charitable gift annuity, you can enjoy tax savings for you and your family or even receive income during your lifetime while helping those in need.  In addition, you will be recognized as a member of the J. T. Edwards Legacy Society, which was established to honor our Founder, Rev. Dr. John T. Edwards.

Dr. Edwards, then pastor of Culpeper Baptist Church, founded Virginia Baptist Homes in 1949 in Culpeper.  Through the years, we have grown to four campuses across Virginia, but Dr. Edwards vision lives on in the benevolent mission of the VBH Foundation.

Annual Golf Tournaments

Our annual golf tournament is a fun way to raise funds. Residents, business partners, and staff work together each year to ensure funds for their community’s Endowed Fund for Benevolence.
