LifeCare Contracts Explained

A recent Wall Street Journal article highlighted the concerns with long-term care insurance for senior adults. An alternative to long-term care insurance is a lifecare contract at a continuing care retirement community.But what is a lifecare contract and how can it benefit you or your loved ones who may need long-term care?

Lifecare Contracts Explained

A Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC, or “Life Plan Community”) can be a wonderful solution for older adults who are independent and active today, but who seek the peace of mind that comes with living in a community where assisted living or health care services will be provided when needed. A CCRC is the only type of retirement community that contractually provides access to services spanning the full continuum of care — beginning with independent living and progressing to assisted living and around-the-clock skilled nursing care.

Yet, CCRCs are not all created equal and resident payment plans can vary dramatically from one provider to another. No single contract type is right for everyone so it is important to understand the differences and make an educated decision regarding your unique situation.

Key Features of Lifecare Contracts

Lifecare contracts are often considered an all-inclusive model and are essentially a form of insurance against the future costs of healthcare services. Among entry-fee CCRCs, a community that offers a lifecare contract will typically require a higher monthly fee while a resident is living independently. The benefit, however, is that the resident has better predictability of monthly expenses over their lifetime because their monthly rate will not increase to reflect the cost of healthcare services when such services are required. Keep in mind that the monthly rate is also influenced by other factors, such as amenities, size of the residential unit, and geographic region.

Other Considerations

Residents who choose a lifecare contract are paying in advance for assisted living and/or health care services that they may or may not need. To help alleviate this concern many communities offering lifecare contracts also offer partially or fully refundable entry fees. Another consideration is that some portion of the entry fee and/or the monthly fee may be deductible as a pre-paid healthcare expense1. (Refundable portions of the entry-fee are not deductible.)

Tip

If you do not own comprehensive long-term care insurance and you seek protection against out-of-pocket costs for extended healthcare needs then a lifecare contract may be right for you. (Those who already own long-term care insurance you may still be able to use it in a lifecare community under certain situations.) The benefit of lifecare is often magnified in the case of double occupancy because the monthly rate under a lifecare contract will likely be substantially less than the cost of two people paying separately for care at market rates over an extended period of time.

Loop selected to lead The Chesapeake

RICHMOND, Virginia—LifeSpire of Virginia is pleased to announce the selection of David Loop as executive director of The Chesapeake, a LifeSpire continuing care retirement community in Newport News.

Loop brings more than 25 years of senior housing experience to The Chesapeake and has valuable involvement with expansion and renovation projects, hospitality program development, strategic planning and fiscal management.  Loop has worked in both large and small retirement communities; with single-site and multi-community organizations; for non-profit and for-profit companies; and with start-up and existing properties. He has also served on numerous professional committees, state association boards and the LeadingAge House of Delegates.

“David’s broad experience will serve The Chesapeake well as the community goes through a major renovation project and strategic planning over the next few years,” said Jonathan Cook, President and CEO of LifeSpire. “We believe he is the perfect fit for The Chesapeake and for LifeSpire.”

Originally from Ohio, Loop holds a bachelor’s degree from Miami University of Ohio and received a certificate in nursing home administration from The Ohio State University.  He has a passion for excellent customer service and has received training from Disney, Ritz Carlton and Four Seasons. He and his wife, Vera, have five children and four grandchildren with a fifth grandchild expected soon.

Now Hiring: Executive Director for The Chesapeake

RICHMOND, Virginia—LifeSpire of Virginia is seeking to hire an executive director for The Chesapeake, a not-for-profit life plan community in Newport News, Virginia. The Chesapeake is one of four communities owned and operated by LifeSpire of Virginia, based in Richmond, Virginia.

The Chesapeake currently consists of 252 independent living apartments/cottages, 57 assisted living beds, 15 assisted living memory support beds and 52 skilled nursing beds. Beginning this summer or early fall, an $8 to $10 million common area renovation project will take place over the next few years.

The community has an outstanding reputation in the Tidewater market and currently provides service to 390 residents and employs 280 staff members.  The health center provides excellent care and has a four-star rating with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the Executive Director is responsible for continuing and enhancing the reputation of the community by providing strategic leadership consistent with the LifeSpire mission, vision and values.  The Executive Director shall provide leadership in the development of policies, procedures and plans, which result in the accomplishment of both the organization’s long and short-range goals.  The Executive Director is responsible for ensuring the development and delivery of appropriate services to the residents, clients and their families.

Key qualifications, duties and personal characteristics for this position are:

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience as an Executive Director of a life plan community
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field
  • NHA license is a plus, but not required
  • Thorough understanding of the senior housing industry
  • Financial management skills; ability to develop and manage the budget for the entire community; identify areas for expense savings or revenue generating opportunities
  • Ability to maintain and strengthen positive working relationships with staff,  residents, and leadership across communities
  • With support of the leadership team, develop and implement a strategic plan that aligns with the LifeSpire mission, vision and values
  • Provide quality programming and services that meet the needs of today’s and tomorrow’s consumer
  • Develop and sustain a community culture of teamwork, professionalism, mutual respect, continuous quality improvement and accountability
  • Develop a strong team of competent and committed professionals who are committed to service excellence
  • Articulate a vision, create consensus and motivate people to build a sense of community

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Support the strategic plan and direction of LifeSpire of Virginia.
  • Direct the overall operations of the facility while complying with state and federal regulations as well as the company’s policies and procedures
  • Ensure compliance and licensure with all licensing agencies
  • Manage occupancy development
  • Plan, develop and manage facility’s operating and capital budgets
  • Develop and monitor all contracted provider services
  • Foster effective communications and teamwork among the facility’s management group
  • Maintain current knowledge about changes in federal, state and local regulations
  • Focus on achieving and maintaining 5-star status in the community

The ideal candidate will be a competent, compassionate and committed professional who is willing to enter into a long-term commitment of service to the organization and do so within a team-oriented, collaborative, servant-leadership environment.  He/she will be a person of high integrity and ethical standards and have a personal reputation that will reflect well on the organization. Of equal importance will be a high standard of care and concern for current and future residents.  He/she will evidence a commitment to establishing community collaborations.  As a relationship-oriented person, the Executive Director will be an excellent communicator and will maintain a visible presence among staff, residents, clients and within the surrounding community.

LifeSpire residents participate in Active Aging Week … and stay fit year-round

Since 2003, the International Council on Active Aging has promoted Active Aging Week during the last week of September. LifeSpire residents in each of its four communities participated in a variety of activities, Sept. 25 – Oct. 1, including walking tours, aquatic exercise, glow-in-the-dark games, Segway outings, drum circles, and mystery walks.

nustep-marathonNuStep Marathon: Forty-three residents participated in The Glebe’s NuStep marathon. Each signed up for a 30-minute time slot on a NuStep machine, keeping two NuSteps occupied continuously for about 11 hours! A few residents who had never tried the NuStep joined a team, prompting Rachel Carson, The Glebe’s wellness coordinator, to proclaim the NuStep marathon the “biggest success” of this year’s Active Aging Week.

lakewood-active-aging-allen-brownLakewood’s drum circle: This interactive event allowed Lakewood residents to enjoy making music while reaping the health benefits of ensemble drumming. While research suggests learning any new skill diminishes and even prevents senile dementia, the physical act of drumming has additional advantages, including improved circulation and loosening stiff joints in the shoulders, arms, and hands.

Research shows that an active lifestyle lessens the challenges and increases the opportunities associated with aging. In addition to celebrating Active Aging Week, LifeSpire seeks to provide an environment within its four communities that offers aging adults programs, guidance, and support for healthy aging — all year long.

the-culpeper-mr-bob-hill Bob Hill, a resident at The Culpeper, is one example of a LifeSpire resident committed to wellness. Hill stays fit by running three times a week, and his fitness goals give him the strength, energy and stamina to volunteer with a number of humanitarian organizations. In the past, Hill’s volunteerism led him to North Africa where he helped build dams, repair schools, and mentor the children of female prisoners who lived in the prison with their mothers. He has also served the needs of low-income people through World Changers in Norfolk by inspecting homes and offering needed repairs to make the homes safer, warmer and drier.

jesse-hughesJesse Hughes, a resident of The Chesapeake, is another example of LifeSpire wellness. Hughes participated in the Virginia Senior Games May 17 – 21 with more than 2,100 participants. Hughes won a gold medal in basketball and three silver medals in the 50-yard run, 25-meter backstroke, and the broad jump. Since moving to The Chesapeake, Hughes has made sure to keep his body in top shape by participating in the many wellness programs the community offers.

‘We are family’ says The Chesapeake’s Dining Room Manager

As the dining room manager at The Chesapeake, Moore understands that the quality of the food and the attitude of the dining room staff give seasoned, new, and prospective residents a sense of The Chesapeake’s unique hospitality.

“From the time they walk in the door, I want them to feel they can be happy and safe here,’” says Moore, who has worked at The Chesapeake for 15 years. “I especially want new and prospective residents to see our community as a place where they want to spend the rest of their lives.”

Moore has a long history of experience in food service, including several well-known Fortune 500 restaurants. Prior to joining the staff of The Chesapeake, Moore was the dining room manager at Lakewood, a LifeSpire community in Richmond. He enjoys preparing and serving delicious, nutritious meals that promote overall wellness, and he believes The Chesapeake’s dining room staff is central to the community’s success.

“We have great, dedicated employees,” Moore says. “Our first priority is service, and our goal is to do the job the right way.”

Moore’s customer service is exemplary, says Tammy Slowikowski, The Chesapeake’s director of dining and hospitality services.

“George and his staff touch each resident every day with food and hospitality,” Slowikowski says. “Here, they don’t come and go” like they would in a traditional restaurant. “This is their home. George understands that.”

The feeling of family is important to Moore, and he trains his staff to see the residents as family as well.

“I tell our younger employees that our residents are like their grandmothers and grandfathers,” Moore says. “We will treat them with the utmost respect because they are part of our family.”

 

LifeSpire advances its relationship with the National Institute of Fitness and Sport

RICHMOND, Virginia—LifeSpire of Virginia, formerly Virginia Baptist Homes, is advancing its relationship with the National Institute of Fitness and Sport (NIFS) as NIFS assumes management of the fitness program at The Chesapeake, a LifeSpire continuing care retirement community in Newport News. NIFS currently manages the fitness program at Lakewood, a LifeSpire community in Richmond’s West End.

“We are pleased that NIFS is now managing fitness in two of our communities,” said Mick Feauto, LifeSpire’s executive vice president and chief operating officer. “They will be very instrumental in developing a comprehensive wellness program that will be implemented in all of our communities.”

NIFS is an industry leader in designing and executing holistic wellness programs for seniors. In January, NIFS signed an agreement with LifeSpire to provide the following services:

  • Personal training, personalized exercise programs, fitness testing, and equipment orientation
  • Group fitness classes
  • Data analysis
  • Health-Related educational sessions, life-long learning opportunities, nutritional coaching, and weight-loss programs
  • Cross-department collaboration
  • Implementation of Incentive and Wellness programs

Research shows that an active lifestyle can lessen the challenges and increase the opportunities associated with aging. NEWPORT NEWS, Virginia—The Chesapeake, a LifeSpire of Virginia continuing care retirement community in Newport News, won the Gold Award from Coastal Virginia magazine for the best retirement community on the Virginia Peninsula.

“This is a significant award and a reason to celebrate,” said Liz Gee, The Chesapeake’s Director of Sales and Marketing. “More than 200,000 votes were cast in all categories, including the Southside and Peninsula, and we rose to the top.”

Ted and Baerbel Schaller model life and love worth living

LAUGHING TOGETHER—Ted and Bell Schaller laugh together as they share the story of how they met and fell in love in Germany in the 1970s.

NEWPORT NEWS, Virginia—She calls him, “My Ted.” He says he always gets the last word: “Yes, dear.”

Ted and Baerbel Schaller obviously love each other. The couple, both 76, will celebrate their 42nd wedding anniversary in June. The couple’s devotion to one another is well-known among residents and staff of The Chesapeake in Newport News, a LifeSpire of Virginia continuing care retirement community, where they’ve lived since 2010.

“They still hold hands walking from their cottage to the dining room. They are an inspiration,” says Patricia Morris, LifeSpire vice president and head of the VBH Foundation, LifeSpire’s benevolence arm.

The Schallers also model wellness, community and hospitality, which is why they are two of LifeSpire’s featured trailblazers during Older Americans Month in May, says Jonathan Cook, LifeSpire President and CEO. The U.S. Administration for Community Living sets aside May each year to recognize the contributions of older Americans. The 2016 theme is “Blaze a Trail.”

“The Schallers are true ambassadors for The Chesapeake,” Cook says. “They represent all that it means to be part of a LifeSpire community.”

ENJOYING LIFE—Ted and Bell Schaller relax in the pool at The Chesapeake, a LifeSpire of Virginia continuing care retirement community in Newport News. The couple regularly uses the community’s pool, hot tub and fitness center to meet a variety of fitness goals.

The Schallers look for every opportunity to be involved in The Chesapeake’s myriad activities. Ted bikes 20 miles three times a week, and Baerbel claims he is “addicted to exercise.” She serves on the activities committee and the chorus committee, and both serve on the worship and spiritual life committee and as music librarians. From “aqua ease” in the community’s indoor pool to exercise class to creative arts to chorus, the Schallers’ involvement and energy seem boundless.

“We moved in six years ago at age 70. It was the best time to do it because there is so much to do,” says Baerbel, who goes by her nickname, Bell, she says, because many people can’t pronounce her German name.

“THIS MUST BE THE PLACE”

The couple first learned about the community when they attended an AARP refresher driving class hosted at The Chesapeake in 2009.

“We can’t afford this,” Ted and Bell said to each other at the time, admiring the many amenities of the community. Ted is a retired U.S. Army sergeant who worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Newport News. Bell is a homemaker who manages the couple’s finances.

“He makes the money, and I spend the money,” Bell quips.

But working with Liz Gee, The Chesapeake’s marketing director, the couple realized affordable options were available to them. The couple also paid a refundable deposit to add their names to a waiting list. This program, now called The Chesapeake Club, allowed them to use the community’s amenities at no additional charge. They also put their house of 34 years on the market — in the middle of the U.S. housing crash.

“Our house was on the market a year,” Bell says. “We moved in anyway.”

“There’s no place like this place so this must be the place!” Ted exclaims.

He continues, “The Chesapeake had the right feel, but two things sold me on it. One … being able to use all the amenities before we moved in. Two: If we run out of funds through no fault of our own, they won’t put us out on the street.”

“This is why we make contributions to the benevolence fund,” Bell says. “We know the benevolence fund helps keep people in their homes.”

The couple also appreciates the faith-based nature of The Chesapeake. Neither Ted nor Bell was “raised in church,” Bell says. Ted’s father immigrated to the U.S. from Austria, and he describes himself as Catholic. Bell grew up in East Germany where worship was forbidden and describes herself as Lutheran. Both say religion plays a part in their lives now, and both serve as ushers in the nondenominational worship service that meets weekly at The Chesapeake.

“The Schallers are ‘utility players,’” says Nancy Hayes, chaplain at The Chesapeake. “I know I can count on them.”

But it isn’t so much “religion” or religious activities that inspire the Schallers as the way that faith-based attitudes play out in their everyday interactions with The Chesapeake’s staff and other residents. “Respect” is one word Ted uses, incidentally the same word he uses to describe the success of their marriage. “Honesty” and “trust” are others.

“People treat each other differently in a faith-based community,” Bell says. “They talk differently to one another. Nobody talks nasty here.”

“Everyone is honest,” Ted says. “It has a calming effect.”

A LIFETIME TOGETHER

Respect, honesty and trust are not only hallmarks of the couple’s relationships with other people; those characteristics have been the foundation of the couple’s relationship with one another since their first meeting in a small West German village in 1974. Bell, whose family lived in East Germany, left the communist state in 1955 when she was 15 years old.

“When I finished my schooling in East Germany, I had the choice of becoming a blacksmith or a mason,” Bell says. “My parents said, ‘No.’” So, the young woman moved to West Germany to live with her aunt and uncle.

Ted, who was stationed with the U.S. Army in West Germany, first spotted Bell at a party in an adjoining village. She didn’t notice him. A few months later, a young American military couple who rented their home from Bell needed a driver to take them to the airport. Ted showed up with the car. Bell didn’t speak much English — as an East German, she had learned Russian in school. Ted, who understood some German, was studying the language. He asked Bell to help him with his German homework.

“We were married six months later,” Ted says, proudly. “It took me three tours to Germany to find her.”

To this day, the two still speak German in their home.

A LIFESTYLE WORTH IMITATING

The couple’s only regret in a lifetime of happiness is that they have no children.

“I love children,” Bell says. “I always wanted children.”

In 1976, the couple filed paperwork to adopt but were advised that the military lifestyle was too unstable for a child. Still, they recognize that the life and love they share is unique and fulfilling.

“We never fight. We have no kids, so there’s no reason,” Ted quips.

“And, we have nieces and nephews, and we have the big family of The Chesapeake,” Bell says.

In particular, her nephew, Sven, who lives in southern Germany, calls, texts and visits them often. They proudly show photos of Sven and the numerous trips they’ve made together.

“One time Sven told my Ted, ‘Uncle Ted, I never drink or smoke because you don’t do it,’” Bell says proudly.

Modeling good behavior for the next generation is important to the Schallers, not just for Sven’s benefit but for others as well.

Bell sums it up best.

“We want to live a life in front of people that they can look up to,” she says.

VBH ANNOUNCES NEW CORPORATE DIRECTOR OF COMMUNICATIONS

Lifespire AnnRICHMOND, Va.—Virginia Baptist Homes (VBH) is pleased to welcome Ann Lovell as Corporate Director of Communications. Ann is succeeding Monica Hillery who retired Feb. 5 after 43 years of service. Ann comes to VBH from the Southern Baptist International Mission Board (IMB) where she served 13 years as a missionary in media roles in the Philippines, South Korea and Thailand and four years on staff as a writer and editor in IMB’s communication center in Richmond.  As a missionary, Ann led Bible studies with local and international women in the Philippines and South Korea. In Thailand, she founded a ministry to exploited women and children, which focuses on sharing the gospel in the red-light districts of northern Thailand.

Ann’s prior experience also includes 11 years of Federal government service with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, and with the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) in Knoxville, Tennessee. While at DOE, Ann wrote speeches, developed presentations and crafted legislative language for senior officials to present to local stakeholders, state and Congressional representatives and the White House.

Ann and her husband, Joe, have two daughters. Lauren is a senior at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. Alli is a freshman in Tucker High School’s Advanced College Academy in Richmond.
