LifeSpire of Virginia launches new leadership development program

By Ann Lovell

RICHMOND, Virginia—LifeSpire of Virginia recently launched a new leadership development program and selected its first two associate administrators, Cidney Colby and Kevin Furman.

Cidney Colby

Colby is a recent graduate of Purdue University in Indiana. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in public health with a concentration in health policy and management. Colby will be based at Lakewood, LifeSpire’s community in Richmond’s west end.

Kevin Furman

Furman is a recent graduate of Old Dominion University in Virginia. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in health sciences with a concentration in health services administration. Furman will be based at The Chesapeake in Newport News.

Traditionally, an administrator-in-training program is a supervised internship that allows the associate administrator to work under the guidance of a licensed administrator and gain additional education and experience in long-term care administration. LifeSpire’s program hopes to go beyond a traditional program to give associates exposure to all aspects of the senior living industry, including clinical services, resident-directed care, marketing, finance and economics, communications and public relations, human resources, strategic planning, risk management and information technology.

Jonathan Cook, LifeSpire’s President and CEO, describes the program as an opportunity to develop leaders and expand the organization’s “bench strength” and managerial capacity.

“We want to give Cydney, Kevin and others who will join the program the opportunity to learn from the best of the best,” Cook said. “As we expand our mission, we want to develop leaders who can position our organization for future growth.”

LifeSpire of Virginia operates four continuing care retirement communities and one continuing care without walls: The Culpeper in Culpeper, The Glebe in Daleville, The Chesapeake in Newport News, and Lakewood and Lakewood at Home in Richmond.
